Mark 11-13
Summarize what you read in one paragraph:
The first two chapters of the reading are all about Jesus’s power. In the beginning of Chapter 11, Jesus tells his disciples to go and find a colt that had not been ridden. They do so, and find it exactly as he said it would be. As he enters Jerusalem, people spread their cloaks and branches on the ground while praising him. The following day, Jesus drives out all the merchants in the temple, and points out a prophecy that was followed by them doing this. The chief priests and teachers of the law start to plot against Jesus, which repeats multiple times in these chapters. There are multiple prophecies about people not trusting his authority, as well as trying to catch him out, and Jesus impressing people with his answers, which once again scares the chief priests and teachers of the law. Jesus starts to talk about the resurrection after chapter 12, and then talks about how important it is to love God, and to love one another. Jesus then warns the Jews about the teachers of the law, but after talks about how valuable it is to give what you can, and even more, with the widow’s offering. Chapter 13 is about the end of times, and we need to be prepared for what the world will do. It talks about how powerful God is, and how he only knows when the world will end, so we need to be vigilant.
What is one key verse?
“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” Mark 11:23
How does what you read change your vision of God?
These chapters show how powerful Jesus is. Jesus intimidates the Chief Priests and Teachers of the law, to the point where they conspire to kill him, and later to have him be arrested. Jesus performs a miracle that impresses the disciples, and then inspires others to be faithful and vigilant, because God is the only one who knows when the end of the world will happen. Jesus is inspiring those around him to follow God and love one another. I always think of Jesus as a loving man and savior, but I forget how strong and powerful he is, to the point where he was intimidating.
How does what you read change your vision of yourself or others?
Jesus reminding us to follow God, and in the same lesson, to love people reminds me how important it is to love one another, no matter what. In this time of so much turmoil, it can be easy for me to look at people in a negative way, but this reminded me how much more important it is to love people.
How will you Go With God because of this reading? (What is an action step?)
I want to be more intentional in loving the people in my life.
Where did you see Jesus in these chapters? (What made you think about Jesus?)
Jesus and his love for us was made so evident. We see how powerful he is, and with that, how much he loves us. He made a tree shrivel in one day, and was so powerful that the chief priests and teachers of the law wanted to have him arrested and killed. He had all this power, but still died for us.
